    Chess engine in C

A chess engine written by hand. No AI in the code. Four commits in and honest about it.

    • C

Work

  • September 2026 to Present

Xfinity Field Sales Professional · Comcast

    Woodbridge, Virginia

Door to door sales for Xfinity internet and mobile. Not an engineering job. It is daily practice at explaining a technical product to someone who has thirty seconds for me, and at hearing no without taking it personally.

  • August 2026 to Present

    Software Engineer · Chessalyz

    Remote

An AI chess coaching product. I built its public sharing feature end to end: the product and security spec, a Node and TypeScript backend on MongoDB, a Next.js frontend, and a test suite of 533 tests that gates fourteen privacy rules in continuous integration.

  • May 2026 to Present

    Project, two-person team · Morphy

Cell tower lease analytics. I built the whole technical side: the data pipeline, the backend, and the map app. See the case study.

  • July 2019 to August 2019

Junior Quality Assurance Engineer Intern · Avast

    Prague

Functional and regression testing of multilingual web and desktop releases at a security software company. My first look at how shipped software is actually checked.

Beyond code

Chess

I started playing in December 2022, online, and badly. By spring I had joined JSV Sissa, the student chess club in Groningen, and the game stopped being a phone habit and became a room full of people who would happily punish a loose pawn.

When I moved to Virginia the first thing I looked for was a club. My first game at the Arlington Chess Club was on 20 June 2025. I have been going since. In 2026 I spent six months at the US Chess Center in Silver Spring as an assistant chess teacher, which taught me more about the game than any book: you cannot explain a plan to a kid unless you understand it yourself.

I train with a coach, Grandmaster Oskar Wieczorek. In December 2025 I played the First Annual Oak Grove Open in Oak Grove, Virginia, and won the Under 1400 section with 4.5 out of 5. My rating went from 1237 to 1385 that weekend.

Two of the projects on this page exist because of chess. Chess Dashboard is where my games and ratings live. The engine in C is me finding out how the machines that beat me actually work.

  • March 2026 to August 2026

Assistant Chess Teacher · US Chess Center

    Silver Spring, Maryland

Taught chess to school-age kids alongside the center’s teachers, from how the pieces move to how to think about a position.

Landscapes, mostly, and whatever the sky is doing.

  • Colourful wooden harbour houses mirrored in still water at sunrise
  • Star trails over a natural rock arch and spring trees at night
  • Driftwood in a shallow lagoon at the mouth of a limestone gorge under grey sky
  • Sun flaring through trees over a rocky river bed with wooded hills behind
  • A bison lying in a dust wallow in a green valley
  • A bison grazing in sagebrush with misty hills behind
  • Edinburgh at dusk from Calton Hill, with the castle and the clock tower behind a columned monument
  • A lone bare tree on the far shore of a blue lake with mountains behind
  • A city skyline across the water at sunset, seen over an infinity pool
  • A car on a country road at night under the Milky Way
  • A house with a red roof and lit windows in a garden under a storm sky
  • Stone houses and a yellow building along a narrow river in Dean Village, Edinburgh
  • An old wooden barn in a grassy field below the Teton range at sunrise
  • A log chapel with a cross in front of the snow-capped Teton peaks

About

I was born in Castelfranco Veneto, a small walled town near Venice. At seven my family moved to Munich for two years, then to Lugano, in the Italian part of Switzerland, for six. I did the last three years of high school in Prague. Then five years in Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, for a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, from 2020 to 2025.

I met my wife in high school in Lugano. We lost touch, found each other again during university, and I moved to the United States to be with her. We live in Virginia with our two kids.

I speak English and Italian as native languages, Spanish well, and enough Czech to order dinner and apologise for my grammar.
